U.S. Senator from Maine
Angus Stanley King Jr. was born in March 1944 in Alexandria, Virginia. He earned an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. He entered private practices in Brunswick, Maine.
He served as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics before returning to private practice. After a dozen years, he founded an energy management company that developed and operated electrical energy conservation projects. He later sold the company. In an interim, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of malignant melanoma. He feels he survived cancer because he had health insurance.
King served as Governor of Maine for eight years before being elected to the Senate. He assumed office in January 2013.
He is divorced from Edie Birny, with whom he had one son. He is married to Mary Herman. Altogether, King has five children and six grandchildren. He is an Episcopalian.

Senator Angus King of Maine is co-chairman with Representative Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. An upcoming commission report on cybersecurity will propose “a very ambitious reorganizing of the federal government, perhaps the most ambitious since the 9/11 Commission” to combat cybersecurity threats.
The report will contain some 75 sweeping recommendations on how the Executive Branch and Congress can develop a national defense strategy for cyberspace. Those recommendations will include preemptive actions the nation can take to better deter cybersecurity attacks.
Senator King said the federal government currently does not have an effective deterrence strategy in cyberspace. “We are getting killed by a thousand cuts,” he said.
The report is “less of a report and more of a blueprint,” King said. “We didn’t want this report to just collect dust.” Both King and Gallagher will testify before congressional committees about the recommendations, hoping that this is the start of a larger discussion.
